Daily diary - Toowoomba, 8 August
8 August 2011
The 2011 Emirates Melbourne Cup hit the road again today to feature at a full day of community events in Toowoomba, where the Tour party was overwhelmed by the town’s progress since the devastating floods.
Starting off with a barbeque breakfast for The Older Men’s Network followed by a visit to the Toowoomba Flexi School, which is supported by the NAB Schools First program, the Tour party staged happy snaps with the iconic Cup.
The event day highlight centred around the Women in Racing luncheon at the Toowoomba Turf Club, where the Victoria Racing Club recognised the support of Jennifer Bartels and Basyln Beel by presenting a miniature replica of the iconic Melbourne Cup.
The grand marquee was filled with colour and movement as 70 women donned in their best racing outfits, admired vintage millinery, exchanged Melbourne Cup memories and clutched the golden trophy for photographs.
Wrapping up the day’s events, the Tour party was impressed by Freedom Aged Care’s efforts, where guests indulged in afternoon tea under a beautiful marquee, mirroring how Melbourne Cup Carnival tents are decked out with Flemington pink and green balloons, chandeliers and sashed seats!
