The 2011 Emirates Melbourne Cup

16 August 2011

The Emirates Melbourne Cup had an early start today with a guest appearance on Australia’s highest rating morning television program Sunrise, where the 18-carat gold Cup starred as the main attraction, sitting pride of place on the desk.

The spectacular Sydney Opera House, one of the world’s most iconic tourist attractions, made the perfect venue for a special Emirates Melbourne Cup launch event, officiated by VRC Chairman, Mr Michael Burn.

Shining brightly in the sun, the golden trophy posed with MYER Ambassador, Jennifer Hawkins and fellow fashionable fillies, Laura Dundovic and Kate Waterhouse for photos with the celebrated backdrop of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

The star-studded affair attracted attention far and wide, with Melbourne Cup winning jockeys Corey Brown (Shocking, 2009) and Kerrin McEvoy (Brew, 2000) joining the 500 kilogram, Jabba Star in the line-up.

From fashion to thoroughbreds, Australian fashion and racing royalty shone alongside the Cup with star-struck Sydneysiders flocking for a photo with the coveted trophy.

James Cummings, fourth generation member of the Cummings racing dynasty, his father Anthony and fellow trainers Gai Waterhouse and Bjorn Baker also caught a glimpse of the trophy they hope to make their own on the first Tuesday in November.

Ever the showman, Tour Ambassador John Letts took his talents to the harbour city, entertaining crowds with Melbourne Cup stories.

The EMCT continues on Thursday, visiting Western Australia. To track the Tour’s progress and view images from today’s Sydney Opera House event, visit our Facebook page, Flemington: Home of the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
