Daily diary - Devonport, 4 Sept
Flying across the Bass Strait to Tasmania, the Cup arrived in Devonport with seasoned Tour Ambassadors, three-time Melbourne Cup winning jockey, Jim Johnson and two-time Melbourne Cup winning trainer, Mick Robins who entertained the community with their Melbourne Cup memories at a series of events.
Starting out with a Father’s Day BBQ breakfast hosted by the Rotary Club, which raised money for prostate cancer, where the community got up close and personal with the iconic trophy before featuring at Pandemonium!
In the afternoon, the Cup mingled with VIPs for a very special occasion hosted by the Devonport Racing Club where the Tasmanian Minister for Racing, Hon Bryan Green MP officially launched Devonport’s new $40million synthetic race track at Spreyton Racecourse.
Racegoers attending the community race day relished the opportunity to get up close and personal with the Cup, sharing Melbourne Cup stories with Tour Ambassadors and taking happy snaps throughout the day.
The Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour’s visit wrapped up with a visit in town to a popular nightspot, where the Tour party indulged in Spanish tapas and enjoyed live music, while the local community got an opportunity to see the coveted trophy.
The VRC would like to officially congratulate the Devonport Racing Club for its new synthetic racetrack, which promises an eventful future, rain, hail or shine!
