The Victoria Racing Club are proud to launch the Melbourne Cup Community Fund and announce the Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre Appeal as the fund's main beneficiary for 2009.
The Melbourne Cup Community Fund's main focus is to support Australian charities that aim to create long-term health and social welfare programs. As the official charity this year, the Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre Appeal, will use the Pin and Win program to raise valuable funds through the sale of the unique miniature gold Melbourne Cup lapel pins.
Proceeds from the Pin and Win program will assist the Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre Appeal to create a specially designed cancer centre at the Austin Hospital in Melbourne, building on the hospital's 127 years of cancer care and expertise.
The centre will include dedicated research into vaccines, treatments and ultimately cures for all types of cancer; working in collaboration with the internationally renowned Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research in New York, as the Institute's largest clinical research worldwide.
"I am delighted that the Victoria Racing Club has chosen our charity as this year's Melbourne Cup Community Fund beneficiary," said Olivia Newton-John. "The Carnival is a great way to celebrate life while raising money for a dedicated Cancer and Wellness Centre for Melbourne."
Construction of the $157 million Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre is scheduled to commence towards the end of 2009 and open by 2012 - pending on funding. The appeal's current fundraising target is to raise a further $13 million, with support from the community, foundations and individual donations.
While raising valuable funds, each pin purchased through the Pin and Win program will also offer the chance to win a selection of great prizes.
The major prize for 2009 is a sensational Lexus IS 250C Sports Model 2.5 litre, Valued at $89,500 (inc GST).
